Bhaktapur, Part Deux

Picking up from where Brian left off...

Part of Bhaktapur's charm is that it is still very much a living city. Bhaktapur houses stunning temples and stories of gods, but it is also home to a more mundane life that plays out over the well-worn, narrow streets surrounding the old squares. Here are some scenes.

Unlike in Kathmandu, agriculture still dominates the land surrounding Bhaktapur. Here, women sift wheatberries harvested from nearby fields.

We spent some time watching this gentleman at work on his wheel. The process is as soothing as it is mesmerizing.

You can buy terracotta everything in Bhaktapur. But the one thing you should not miss trying is a terracotta pot full of King Curd, Bhaktapur's other famous product. Kind Curd, or Ju Ju Dhau, has been called the richest, creamiest yogurt in the world. That's quite a claim. Brian, the dairy lover in our household, really likes it and says it is somewhat similar to the thick Greek yogurt he used to buy in the States.

You can probably order King Curd in most restaurants in Bhaktapur, but, better yet, buy a small pot of the stuff at one of the many King Curd shops around town.

Even if you're not the curd type, it is easy to while away time in Bhaktapur. Find a perch on a balcony in one of the squares and watch life shuffle along below.
