Saturday Cafe

Yesterday I met up with some folks who are in town for a short work assignment, and I gave them my list of must-see sights around the Kathmandu Valley. Of course, at the top of the list is Boudha, which is one of our very favorite places in Kathmandu. Another favorite spot? Saturday Cafe in Boudha. We go to Saturday Cafe just about every time we make our way to Boudha. We enjoy it so much that we can't seem to make ourselves try other places.

Saturday Cafe is a totally vegetarian restaurant that also offers a lot of vegan options. The menu includes a typical smattering of Continental, East Asian, and Nepali cuisines, but it stands out by featuring organic vegetables, brown rice, homemade soups and pastas, and fresh juices, like this beet and carrot concoction below.

Oh, and it serves breakfast all day too -- which is a very good thing because their homemade oatmeal toast is wonderful.

If you have a sweet tooth like my husband, try one (or two) of their desserts, some of which are vegan and all of which have refreshingly short and simple ingredient lists.

Be prepared for a bit of a "dharma bum" culture at the cafe, as it is a standard hang-out and meeting spot for travelers studying Buddhism and meditation at the monasteries around Boudha. It's kind of fun to eavesdrop on their conversations, which are sometimes VERY DEEP.

We admit that the Saturday Cafe does not offer the best view of the stupa, which is a little obstructed by another cafe terrace in the foreground.

But we're willing to deal with that until we find something better than Saturday Cafe.

For our Kathmandu readers out there, what are your favorite restaurants in Boudha and elsewhere? We are always looking to try new places, particularly hidden gems!
